John Bolton's UN Honeymoon is Over: US Ambassador Gets Spanked by Great Britain

Share / Recommend - Comment - Print - Sunday, Nov 27 2005, 10:04AM

bolton.gif

John Bolton is having a public feud with Great Britain over his effort to withhold the UN's budget until various reforms are adopted. This was a classic Jesse Helms tactic of the past and shows that Bolton is tipping towards bludgeoning the United Nations rather than using diplomatic skill to achieve his objectives.

From the Daily Telegraph:

Britain has angered John Bolton, America's combative ambassador to the United Nations, by breaking ranks with him over the need for reform.

The rare public disagreement between the two close allies comes as the showdown over reforms at the UN's New York headquarters becomes increasingly acrimonious.

Britain has rebuffed a Bolton move to join him in refusing to pass the organisation's 2006 budget until member states approve wide-ranging management reforms.

Hopefully, the recess-appointed U.S. Ambassador to the UN will drop the feuding theatrics and get back to diplomacy -- but in the words of one high-ranking State Department official with whom I spoke on Wednesday, "We are lucky Bolton is no longer here (at headquarters)."

Thanks you for this Bolton tidbit. I was just about to write and say I thought things had gotten a bit boring since the end of the Bolton battle. Then voila, my favorite bette noir is in our face again.

Just to liven things up, maybe we should all write to Kofi Annan and express our objections to being represented by someone who was not confirmed by the legislative branch of the US government, therefore, he does not represent the people of the US, just the person who circumvented our constitutional process to recess appoint him.

We as a nation have the right to be represented at the UN by someone who is committed to the UN Charter. Bolton and his boss are bent on destroying the UN.

Kofi Annan can be reached at inquiries@un.org

"Hopefully, the recess-appointed U.S. Ambassador to the UN will drop the feuding theatrics and get back to diplomacy"

Oh yes, of course. The rabid lunatic Bolton is suddenly going to be stricken with the capacity for diplomacy, its going to rain rose petals in Bagdad, and Monkey Boy isn't going to fall off his bike this week.

Good God, how can anyone use the words "Bolton" and "diplomacy" in the same paragraph??? Are we supposed to be SUPRISED he's pissing people off at the UN? Just be happy Monkey Boy put him in charge of WORDS instead of WEAPONS.

Golly, somebody needs to tell Secretary Rice & the President about Bolton's behavior and tactics. I am sure, that if they knew, they would agree with the British about the funding and yank Bolton back to Washington for a good dressing down.

Bolton's style is not to negotiate, and certainly not to compromise. He will state his position and ask for support. Some UN members will go along with almost anything the US requests, but Bolton won't be able to browbeat enough natios to prevail in either the Security Council or the General Assembly.

After a few months of not getting his way, Bolton will focus on his original agenda. He will urge that the US withhold funding, withdraw from membership in various UN agencies, and finally resign our membership in the UN itself.

Steve, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you speak to an "anonymous" Bolton supporter who said that if Bolton didn't change his methods, he would be outta there?

any chance you can get this source to comment again?

Posted by Laura, Nov 27 2005, 12:30PM - Link

As far as I can see, so far Bolton seems to be the right man for the job. Someone had to stand up to the UN and it's support of terrorism and islamo-fascism. And he got the UN to actually condemn hizbullah for it's recent attack on Israel. I don't think that would have happened prior to Bolton's arrival.

Posted by cmac, Nov 27 2005, 12:55PM - Link

Oh. He has diplomatic skills?

Posted by ruffian, Nov 27 2005, 1:41PM - Link

so surprising!
snip
Mr Bolton, a long-time and vocal UN critic, arrived in New York four months ago with a reputation as an uncompromising tough talker. Privately, British diplomats express surprise that he has not made greater efforts to cultivate them or build alliances. "You're either with him or against him," said one.

Diplomacy...We don't need to show you no steenking diplomacy

Posted by Steve Clemons, Nov 27 2005, 2:30PM - Link

Dear P.Lukusiak:
The source who said that Bolton would have to change or "would be out of there" was not anonymous. The person who said that to me was Senator Lindsay Graham.
Best,

Just like the rest of the Bush administration, Bolton is another sorry excuse for a diplomat. He knows nothing of diplomacy, and that was clear during his confirmation hearings. Then Bush uses a recess appointment to get him past the Senate. These people are doing more to hurt the U.S. reputation around the world than any other administration in history. It's a disgrace!

Posted by Ace Loves Gary, Nov 27 2005, 2:35PM - Link

Bolton: And in this pose I'm daring people to come up with some sort of phallic-centric caption to describe my diplomacy skills.

Posted by nicky, Nov 27 2005, 3:26PM - Link

Yeah, Steve's back! I couldn't sit through another "insider" post of Margeret Carlson dressed in a pink pengoir jacking off Chris Dodd during "A Man For All Seasons."

Posted by susan, Nov 27 2005, 5:19PM - Link

let us all be crystal clear:Mr. Bolton is NOT the United States Ambassador. He is George W. Bush's Ambassador, having been installed in his post by Mr. Bush's fiat after the People's representatives were unable to agree to confirm him. Therefore, he speaks not for the people of this country, but solely for the Bush regime.

This fact should be pointed out repeatedly to all the news outlets who persist in referring to this disgrace as the "US Ambassador."

Posted by Dons Blog, Nov 27 2005, 7:30PM - Link

I seem to remember a statement from Kofi Annan that if the UN were to move from New York, they'd save so much money they wouldn't need the money the US owes. It would seem we're not in that strong a position to threaten any more.

I wonder how long it will be until the other countries give up on the US and move of their own accord.

Laura, "its" only needs an apostrophe if it means "it is". Other than that you type very well for a moron.

Reading the latest on John Bolton it comes as no surprise. He is living up to his pre-appointment advertisement during his torturous route to his recess appointment. Obviously, when you cannot appoint someone to such a high post the correct way, and must go behind everyone's back to sneak an appointment, you get what you deserve. Bolton is a disgrace as a diplomat, the only saving grace; he really should not be able to do any lasting damage at the U.N. After all, it still is the U.N.

Posted by Carol Gee, Nov 27 2005, 9:34PM - Link

There are some really sad outcome of the Bolton appointment. So much wasted time and lost effort was taken up with Bolton's making messes. All that energy could have been used to repair the years of damage done by the current go-it-alone administration to our place in the family of nations. I am amazed it took the UK this long to get into disagreement with the rakish Mr. B.

Posted by Draculich, Nov 27 2005, 10:21PM - Link

Is there any way we could secretly exchange John Bolton for Michael Bolton?

Posted by Pissed Off American, Nov 27 2005, 11:37PM - Link

Well, Rice is currently examining size eights, and Monkey boy is clothes pinning playing cards to the spokes of his Huffy Trailmaster. Perhaps they can attend to Boltie tomorrow.

Steve, I do believe there are quite a few of us that like the "insider stuff" AND keeping an eye on Bolton. (It was fantastic what happened at your "New America Foundation" with Larry Wilkerson)

Here's an interesting quote:
"He also threatened that the United States could seek an alternative to the UN for solving international problems in future."

Okay BoltOn, whaddya have in mind? Spell it out, you've got our attention.

Proposal: Can we start outsourcing the Bush cabal? We can start with BoltOn.

Can Dons Blog kindly provide me the link to Kofi Annan's statement that he refers to. I am unable to get to your link.

I have been saying that at my blog

from Day 1 and it would be nice to have Kofi's views on my blog.

So Bolton's attitude/actions have come back to bite him on the a** are hindering something he wants? HMMMMM Why don't I think he will learn from this. This is one of prime reasons I felt he was wrong from the job.

Posted by Barb in NY, Nov 28 2005, 9:47AM - Link

When is Bolton's recess appointment over? Any bets on whether he'll get official confirmation?

Posted by Steambomb, Nov 28 2005, 10:23AM - Link

No surprises here. When is this dickheads' recess appointment over with? Also. When will the United States be able to salvage any credibility with the diplomats of the world?

A Bolton Spanking at the hands of the Queen Mother. I love it ! Let's see what the cartoonists can do with this. L'enfant terrible expresses more of his true colors. We need more red-faced Bolton tirades for the world to see. Stay tuned.

Reform Idea for BoltOn: Separate the budget process from the reform process. Just saying...

Posted by Bolton Detractor, Nov 28 2005, 1:27PM - Link

In spring of 2001, there was a colloquium held in Washington. (Note that this was shortly after the change of administrations here, and the impeachment nightmare was fresh in everyone's mind.) John Bolton represented AEI and the right wing radical nationalism of the new administration, and an Oxford don represented the "European", internationalist perspective on the legitimacy of the International Criminal Court in a debate on whether the United States should approve it. (The Oxford don was a distinguished barrister and practitioner of international public law.) In the introductions, the worthy don began his remarks by commenting mischievously: "You Americans have taught us quite a lot in the past few years. Most valuably, we've discovered that while [anticipatory pause], on our side of the pond, we say [mischievous pause] fellaaaaaaaaaahtio, you say fellaytio." The audience burst into nervous laughter. Bolton turned crimson with embarrassed fury at the illustrious legacy of his party's recent antics. What has not changed since that time is Bolton's need to see a dentist and/or adopt the practice of using toothpaste and a toothbrush in his daily grooming regimen.

Steve said: "This was a classic Jesse Helms tactic of the past and shows that Bolton is tipping towards bludgeoning the United Nations rather than using diplomatic skill to achieve his objectives."

Anyone who has raised a three year old child knows that there will come the time when you have to stop trying to reason with the child because he just won't understand. I believe that the UN is the composite of a three year old child. This is an institution consisting of largely third-world countries, who like a helpless child, have lots of needs that they cannont meet for themselves. It is the responsibility of the adult in the room to steer them in the right direction - gently if possible, sternly if necessary. Diplomacy within the UN has resulted in the children running the place. It's time for the adults to take back the institution.

to bert:
it's with an apostrophe is also is used to show possesion. Now who did you say was a moron? I agree with Laura. Bolton is the man for the job.
