Note to Vice President Cheney: Call Your Neighbor, Apologize, and Pay the Dinner Bill

Share / Recommend - Comment - Print - Sunday, Oct 22 2006, 5:16PM

cheney-rumsfeld.jpeg

A rumor has come my way that seems too delicious not to report. Since the source of the rumor is acquainted with Vice President Cheney's neighbor, I believe it has veracity.

Both Cheney and Don Rumsfeld have get-away homes in St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. They live near each other -- but in between them is a Democrat.

Party identification not withstanding, Dick Cheney invited his neighbor and spouse out to dinner with the Donald and Joyce Rumsfeld and some other friends -- just a sort of get to know the neighborhood kind of gathering.

The neighbor and his wife obliged and showed up at a local high-end restaurant and were greeted by the Defense Secretary who told him that Cheney had been kept back at work -- you know, being Vice President and all and having the affairs of the nation to tend to. But Rumsfeld said that they all ought to proceed with dinner.

Then the check arrived.

And the check languished on the table. . .and it just sat there. . .for a painfully long time.

No one reached to pay the bill. Rumsfeld just ignored it.

Finally, the Dem who lives sandwiched between the Vice President and Defense Secretary paid the dinner bill. I was told that there were seven people there.

And to this day, Cheney never called to apologize for missing the dinner -- or to express thanks that the Dem picked up the tab.

Pretty cheesy (and cheap) behavior by the cabal.

I was in St Michael's in 1967. It was a wonderful, magical place with great memories for me. Now the powerful trash has moved in. There goes the neighborhood... Damn!

Steve, Steve, Steve,
The gentleman who picked up the tab was blessed and protected by the Lord! Had the ill-mannered one actually shown up and paid for the dinner, the dem neighbor could have been subsequently invited to a hunting trip!

Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you... POW!
:D

does killing several hundred thousand iraqis for no better reason than killing 2 million vietnamese approach "cheesiness" as well?

lode o fo sheesey !!

If anything, Rumsfeld and the others at dinner should be ashamed on not even offering to pay their share of the bill.

Posted by alston, Oct 22 2006, 8:54PM - Link

The rumor sounds like a lot of BS to me.

Posted by Steve Clemons, Oct 22 2006, 9:09PM - Link

alston -- it's wise to be skeptical of rumors. i will check it out further after next week. it could be bs...and it should be easy to check out. so, more later on that -- but it seemed real enough for me to put out there, with the proviso that people realize that this is still unsubstantiated rumor.

best, steve clemons

A rumor perhaps, but indeed delicious.

Posted by steve duncan, Oct 22 2006, 10:56PM - Link

You left out the part where Rummy went to the bathroom and came back to the table not having washed his hands.

Posted by Pissed Off American, Oct 22 2006, 11:22PM - Link

Habeas Corpus flushed down the toilet by these people, and nary a word. But defile dining ettiquette, and Steve is Johnny On The Spot.

(Well, yeah Steve, this one DOES warrant an apology from me.)

Gee Steve, golly, I'm sorry.

Generally when I slowly come to the realization that I'm around people with no shame, I'm never be embarrassed about uttering the immortal words, "Separate checks, please."

There's no social obligation at all, and no point of etiquette, that would require the Dem neighbor to pick up the entire bill.

And I don't think he's overly generous or just a pigeon, either. I think he just realized he was sandwiched between two neighbors who had very lousy aim--whether at the micro level (shotgun) or the macro level (Iraq)--no hesitation about pulling the trigger, no compunction about collateral damage, and a long, long history of working together.

If your survival instinct dictated picking up a check, I'd do it. Hell, I hear some people even mow their own lawn, just to please the neighbors.

did you really expect anything else?

Posted by Jaideep Dargan, Oct 23 2006, 12:45AM - Link

And was this local Democrat Larry David? Sure sounds like an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm to me. . .

Posted by Kevin Hayden, Oct 23 2006, 6:05AM - Link

On the other hand, that should qualify the Dem to get the next no-bid contract to rebuild Iraq.

Posted by KathyP, Oct 23 2006, 7:54AM - Link

What a perfect metaphor for what's happening with the debt that the Bush cabal is dumping on the nation! Guess who's going to have to pay the bill.

Posted by john o., Oct 23 2006, 8:24AM - Link

Rummy is going to run out on the bill in Iraq too.

Posted by karenk, Oct 23 2006, 10:52AM - Link

True or not? it's so right up their alley as to be of no surprise. Cheney exudes evil. He gives me the serious creeps.
Loved KathyP's take on it-Yep their all having a grand ole time on us!
And the separate check idea is great, but I suppose it wouldn't come into mind for someone who is wealthy enough to live in this posh area-for those of us who simply couldn't afford to pick up the entire tab it would be a necessity, social etiquette aside.
With any luck Rummie got indigestion.

Posted by Punchy, Oct 23 2006, 11:09AM - Link

Seven people? Confused, if Cheney skipped out. Seems there's more to blame than just those two. Somebody brought extra guests, who should have paid their share, too.

It IS the perfect metaphor for these guys...everything is one someone ELSE'S dime...

Posted by SevenOneEight, Oct 23 2006, 11:24AM - Link

Did the dinner take place at the Inn at Easton? If so, I can confirm that story.

Posted by Kathleen, Oct 23 2006, 1:30PM - Link

I don't know what the total was, but it may be worth it to be able to trash them. He sure got to know them and should be "on a diet" if ever he receives another invitation from this stingy bunch.

They have no shame, and as already commented, we will all be left holding the bag when this bunch gets drummed out of town, not a moment too soon.

Too bad the dinner didn't include tainted spinach.

Cheney 2002: "deficits don't matter"

Cheney 2006: "Stiffing the guests with the check doesnt't matter"

Posted by David, Oct 23 2006, 2:30PM - Link

Can't resist saying that this story has the ring of truthiness.

Had the neighbor walked out without paying the check, would he have been arrested for dissing the veep, as was the man who told Shooter what he thought of his policies several weeks ago?

Posted by John, Oct 23 2006, 5:06PM - Link

If not true, it's certainly plausible. It's totally consistent with this administration's interpretation of the Bible: "Stiff thy neighbor."

Posted by JoMoHo, Oct 23 2006, 5:07PM - Link

to add to above (Robert)
>>Cheney 2002: "deficits don't matter"

>>Cheney 2006: "Stiffing the guests with the check doesnt't matter"

i.e. Cheney 2006: "deficits don't matter"

serves him right for sharing a table with those murderers

Posted by Hedley Lamarr, Oct 23 2006, 9:10PM - Link

The Dem should have done the after meal drill where he goes around the table asking, "Now, who had the lobster, who had the white wine,...?"

Posted by OCPatriot, Oct 24 2006, 12:25AM - Link

Best joke I heard about Cheney was:

Dick Cheney and his good old friend met and Cheney explained he wanted to go hunting, so he asked his old friend, "Are you game?"

Posted by billmon, Oct 24 2006, 11:53AM - Link

If the guy went out to dinner with Rumsfeld, I'm surprised he didn't end up missing his wallet.

Posted by Matt, Oct 24 2006, 8:01PM - Link

Whatever the case, I'm sure all the parties here have so much money that they could just as well use it for toilet paper.

Linc Chafee's friends.

I hear Rahm Emanuel has this issue too.

I wonder if it's a Chicago thing.

Posted by RJJ, Oct 31 2006, 3:36AM - Link

Best not confirm this story till the Dem sells his house - which won't be easy with those neighbors. He will have no peace or enjoyment there now those antic sadistic lads have [figuratively and psychologically] poisoned his well.

you're going to dish dirt on me you'll need to be original. I have already written a book about my felonious past. I outed myself, so to speak so there is nothing revelatory about these so-called factoids. The book is called News Junkie. It was published last week.
