Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes

WASILLA, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal.

So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.

Ms. Havemeister was one of at least five schoolmates Ms. Palin hired, often at salaries far exceeding their private sector wages.

When Ms. Palin had to cut her first state budget, she avoided the legion of frustrated legislators and mayors. Instead, she huddled with her budget director and her husband, Todd, an oil field worker who is not a state employee, and vetoed millions of dollars of legislative projects.

And four months ago, a Wasilla blogger, Sherry Whitstine, who chronicles the governor’s career with an astringent eye, answered her phone to hear an assistant to the governor on the line, she said.

“You should be ashamed!” Ivy Frye, the assistant, told her. “Stop blogging. Stop blogging right now!”

Ms. Palin walks the national stage as a small-town foe of “good old boy” politics and a champion of ethics reform. The charismatic 44-year-old governor draws enthusiastic audiences and high approval ratings. And as the Republican vice-presidential nominee, she points to her management experience while deriding her Democratic rivals, Senators Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr., as speechmakers who never have run anything.

But an examination of her swift rise and record as mayor of Wasilla and then governor finds that her visceral style and penchant for attacking critics — she sometimes calls local opponents “haters” — contrasts with her carefully crafted public image.

Throughout her political career, she has pursued vendettas, fired officials who crossed her and sometimes blurred the line between government and personal grievance, according to a review of public records and interviews with 60 Republican and Democratic legislators and local officials.

Boy -- both of them were great in the skit. Tina Fey looked so much like Palin -- and her voice was PERFECT. Great fun.

Fey's political leanings clearly shine through the skit. I found it rather mean spirited and dovetailing nicely to DNC cliff notes..not a shocker given Fey's political activism. She will attempt to do what Chevy Chase did to Ford. Well, Dana Carvey and Will Farrel were funny as the various Bush Presidents because they highlighted personality quirks...Fey is just clealry trying to portray Palin as a stupid bimbo. My the claws come out. Thank you, but I'll not be watching SNL this season.

Well, the truth has a liberal bias. You might be happier if you just plant your TV on Fox News for the next two months - plus four years.

It's too funny because I have been telling my friends ever since they announced Palin was running, that Tina Fey would be DEAD-ON to impersonate her...just wait and see...AND IT HAPPENED!

Hmm. I missed the skit, but I must be misunderstanding something....

I thought Fey was a comedian, and now you're telling me she's a realist?.

Tina Fey is clearly the leader in terms of portrayals of Palin, but the episode itself was one of the most unfunny I've seen in a long time. Amy Poehler is clearly carrying the show and none of the new arrivals are anything to crow about.

I fear an abysmal season for this comic legend.

I love how everyone gets so serious when it comes to politics. We hear the same blah blah every election. When the great leaders get into office, they play the blame game as to why they cannot get their way. To see comedians make fun of our politicians is the american way! After all, most politicians are joke any way

Casey and Cal - Sadly, Tina Fey's portrayal of Palin is spot on. Palin is a joke and someone had to say it. Comparing herself to Hillary is an insult! It's not a liberal media bias, but those that actually see her for what she is. She is the female version of Bush: Smug, elitist, highly inexperienced, and a flashcard reader with her blizzard of words. The media really needs to do her job and educate the American people we cannot afford another 8 years of this madness. That being said, Tina Fey was hilarious - what a smart parody! Loved it!

I thought Tina and Amy did a great job at skewering their respective targets! Tina does have more than a passing resemblence to Sarah Palin, which only makes it more amusing. SNL has always poked at politicians: Dana Carvey's Bush 41 begging not to be a "one-termer", Phil Hartman's Clinton warning of warlords in Somalia while stuffing himself with Big Macs and Dan Akroyd's State of the Union as Jimmy Carter (with Bill Murray as Mondale and John Belushi in a white wig the perfect paroday of Tip O'Neil) are all examples of satire that is erudite and accesible -- and funny! It takes an enourmous ego to want to be President of the US; Thank God for the comedians (and others) to remind us that even the leader of the free world is still human.

"Palin's Favorability Numbers Eroding

As voters have taken a second look at Sarah Palin in venues like the Charlie Gibson interview and even Tina Fey's SNL sketch, they may not be as enamored of what they're seeing.

The Research 2000 poll for Daily Kos now has Palin's favorability-unfavorability scores at 45-44 -- just a +1. Six days ago, when the poll, launched, she was at a 52-35, a +17.

And I know that some of you don't like or don't trust this poll -- for reasons that I think are a little silly -- but there is a similar decline in her numbers in the Diageo/Hotline poll. Her favorability numbers in yesterday's Hotline poll -- today's isn't out yet -- were a 48-36, or a +12. But a week ago, on September 8, she had been at a 48-24, a +24."

WigWag, lets be honest for a moment. Snl is funny, Mcain is a patriot, Palin is a babe and Obama is a sociallist. Oh yea, Biden is a joke.

1) these are "entertainers", "comedians". it's supposed to be funny. if you don't think it's funny, that's okay. it doesn't make them wrong. and, you don't have to agree with them to think they're funny (or not funny). to make fun of or impersonate a political figure is no more or less insulting or impressive than doing the same to tony bennett, or harry carey, or prince, or the legions of people that have been impersonated on that show. please let's not be as backwards as those who wanted to behead certain cartoonists.

2) it's okay to joke with or about someone, but i don't think it's okay to CALL SOMEONE A JOKE. Sarah Palin is not a "joke". She's a human being. Let's not forget that a lot of people that our current president was a joke, and he got elected. twice. [well, once, really, but that's another story...]

Come on... every single politician who hits the national stage gets skewered by SNL. It's almost as if it's a rite of passage.
Well, actually, they haven't gone after Joe Biden yet. Maybe it's because he's so downright boring.

If McCain had picked Tina Fey to run as his VP and imitating Sarah
Palin, THAT might have been enough for me to consider voting for
him. I like a good sense of humor, and it's an essential quality in a
leader.

Palin strikes as both not having a sense of humor, and as a person
who generally needs to have every joke explained to her in detail,
and then told why it's funny. Certainly not the sort of person who
can enjoy a good joke, even when it's at their own expense. This is
where GHWB and even Jerry Ford showed some real class. Palin is
more in line with W's reactions to Colbert during his set at the
Correspondent's dinner a few years back.

This clip had me peeing myself!

You know what's amazing for me as an observer of how Americans going through president race? It all looks like a cat fight. I was intoduced to SNL and I thought this is one of the funniest show on TV, but not now. What I see is SNL become just another way for democrats to let everybody know what they think. No, I'm wrong, not for all SNL crew, but for Tina Fey. I thought she left, what's her problem now? What happened to equal rights for both parties democrats and to be laught at? Why wouldn't she write something to mimic Biden or Billary? My personal opinion that Seth Meyers as head writer should put his foot down stop being under Tina Fey's thunb and do something about bringing SNL to be funny.

With all of this political back and forth B.S. going on, I'm glad that SNL is around to keep things on a lighter note - whether you are Democrat or not. Anyone who watched the REAL interview with Katie Couric would completely understand the need to poke fun at Sarah Palin. I laughed just as hard during the real interview, believe it or not. It was pitiful. The fact that this woman could be one heartbeat away from being the President of my country scares the hell out of me. If McCain and Palin do not want to ridiculed, then maybe they should stop making asses of themselves.

SNL has not been funny for years. Everytime i watch SNL now i want to punch the comedians, and i come up with anger, that is something i never knew i could find from watching a comedian. Not sure what interviews you've been watching (maybe the ones where McCain appears as a creepy father figure monitoring her every word?), but I'm pretty sure Palin has been portraying Palin as a stupid bimbo.

Also, I'm sure SNL wouldn't mind losing you as a viewer. Generally, people without a sense of humor or real intelligence don't do well with sketch comedy. Have fun with FOX!

This skit truly depicts that Sarah Palin's inadequate ability to represent a "true womans" voice. Her lack of knowledge and experience in the political realm only vehemently shine through the ceiling of laughter that so many of us need durring the dark and depressing economic era!

Thank you, SNL and Tina Fey for saving our political satire with such excellent comedy!
