That's a good question. Here are some more:

Why weren't Bush and Cheney impeached? Why are the same people responsible for destroying Iraq and New Orleans still in power and demanding $700 billion to bail out their Wall Street pals? Why is the American government sending troops and firing rockets into Pakistan when the evidence is that this only destabilizes matters further?

Answer to all these questions: The American establishment is hopelessly dysfunctional and almost completely indoctrinated by reactionary ideology (also known as swallowing the Kool-Aid) or intimidated by reactionary thugs. All these disasters and disgraces persist because the people that count in this country really don't have a problem with them. That includes torture, illegal arrest, eavesdropping without warrants, and propping up a hopelessly incompetent oligarchy. Until the establishment is drastically purged by one means or another, this state of affairs can be expected to persist.
